The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) actively reviews and spotlights cinema at-large, with a particular emphasis on film and TV highlighting the Black experience, especially that produced, written and/or directed by persons from the African Diaspora. Members are also engaged in AAFCA’s advocacy work, which includes programming for students interested in film criticism and journalism in addition to general community outreach.
The African Artists’ Association (or the 3As as we are lovingly called) was born when a small passionate group of creative individuals came together in 2008 to voice our frustration over the negative portrayal of characters’ African heritage in a number of popular Hollywood films. We understood the urgent need to create an international organization that would not only be a voice for the voiceless; but would also stand up against the negative portrayal of Africans in the film and arts industry.
