Harold E. Sparks, a handsome young man from Hamilton, Ohio leaves the security of a foreman position at Fisher Body, a division of General Motors, and moves to Inglewood, CA to fulfill his dream of opening a soul food restaurant. "The Serving Spoon" ™ The idea of providing excellent food that is not only "Love At First Bite”, but a place where customers feel like family, quickly caught on. “The Spoon”, as often called by many, has served customers ranging from entertainers to politicians to the neighbor next door. All in the spirit of making you feel at home, with food that’s good for the soul. Harold’s daughter and son-in-law now own and operate the family business, and are developing key markets throughout the United States.

We are a non-exclusive African-American theatre company dedicated to cultivating an ensemble of indigenous artists to create original theatrical works of cultural and historical significance in the African-American tradition.  We engage the younger generations of the community through educational, cultural, and historical training and awareness to create theater as a lynch-pin, participatory activity for the African-American community.

The Vegan Vine was developed when a family member had some questions regarding the use of animal products in winemaking . He was curious if Clos LaChance’s wines were suitable for his animal-free lifestyle. After meeting with the production team, it was determined that we could make a line of Vegan wines that were high quality—and educate Vegans in the process.

Houston’s This Is It Soul Food Restaurant has long served up foods originated from traditional slave and Southern cuisine, including ham hocks, chitterlings, black-eyed peas, smothered pork chops and oxtails. Frank and Mattie Jones, the late grandparents of the current owner, Craig Joseph, opened This Is It in 1959 in a frame house at 1003 Andrews, located in Freedmen’s Town, a predominately African American neighborhood in Fourth Ward.

Way back in LYNCHBURG, TENNESSEE, the name Nearest Green has always meant something special. His birth name was Nathan Green, but his family and friends called him Uncle Nearest. No one actually knows how he obtained that nickname, so we assume he was the “nearest and dearest” to so many who came in contact with him.

Hailing from Maryland, one of the original capitals of whiskey making in the United States, we don’t know how or when Uncle Nearest made his way southwest to Tennessee. What we can confirm is he is the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States and thought to be responsible for helping perfect the Lincoln County Process, a requirement in being categorized as Tennessee Whiskey.

There are 32 museums and cultural centers in the Hampton Roads region. Out of the 32 centers, only 4, are African American centered, including Historic Jamestown. The Virginia African American Cultural Center will be a place where local residents and visitors can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience relating to their lives, historically, aesthetically, and culturally. The Center will transcend race and unite the history of many older communities by sharing stories that shaped the fabric of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

It will highlight the contributions and achievements of African Americans to the region.

We are independent and with the support of independent loving fans, we intend to stay that way. You can’t be closer to the source of your beer than to sit in the shadow of the fermenter your beer was kegged from days before.
