We brewed our first small batches in our studio apartment right across from Marcus Garvey Park. The early beers were made with a home brew kit, a gift that sat in the closet for several weeks (that might explain why the first brewed weren't such a hit). We kept on brewing, never giving up on trying to perfect our recipes. Today, we still brew our beers in small batches, whether experimenting with new styles on our Pico Brew Zymatic or brewing up traditional beers with natural yeasts during our Harlem Brewdio sessions. Harlem Brewing creates delicious legendary beverages that celebrate community and craft. Our flagship Sugar Hill Golden Ale, Harlem Renaissance Wit, and 125 IPA all celebrate the rich culture of Harlem. The company was founded in November 2000 by Celeste Beatty and is based in Harlem, USA.
Harlem Brewing has more than 20 years of history and tradition. Harlem born and raise its unique refreshing layers of flavors resulted in the People's Champ Award for Best Brews NYC and Best Beer at the annual Beer and Bacon Fest at Citifield. The beers are sold internationally and have been featured on MSNBC, FOX News, Forbes Magazine, New Brewer, Draft, People, and Ebony. Harlem Brew South, its sister brewery pub is located in Rocky Mount, NC.

In 1984, Steve Hindy ended a five and a half-year tour as the Middle East Correspondent for the Associated Press where he covered wars and assassinations in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Sudan. On his last night in Beirut, his hotel was hit by a mortar barrage. Steve picked up a still-warm piece of shrapnel as a memento, packed up his family and returned to New York City. During his years in the Middle East, Steve befriended diplomats based in Saudi Arabia, where Islamic law prohibits alcoholic beverages. The envoys were avid homebrewers and happily plied Steve with their flavorful beers. Returning to live in Brooklyn and editing foreign news for Newsday, Steve started brewing at home. Eventually, he enlisted his downstairs neighbor, banker Tom Potter, and they set out to establish the Brooklyn Brewery. Steve placed that shrapnel on his desk as a reminder of his days in the Middle East, and it still sits there next to his books.
Way back in LYNCHBURG, TENNESSEE, the name Nearest Green has always meant something special. His birth name was Nathan Green, but his family and friends called him Uncle Nearest. No one actually knows how he obtained that nickname, so we assume he was the “nearest and dearest” to so many who came in contact with him.
Hailing from Maryland, one of the original capitals of whiskey making in the United States, we don’t know how or when Uncle Nearest made his way southwest to Tennessee. What we can confirm is he is the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States and thought to be responsible for helping perfect the Lincoln County Process, a requirement in being categorized as Tennessee Whiskey.

We’re not a chain and our beer is not mass-produced. We buy our grain locally and delivered it to San Antonio and South Texas. We are independent and with the support of independent loving fans, we intend to stay that way. You can’t be closer to the source of your beer than to sit in the shadow of the fermenter your beer was kegged from days before. If you wander too close to the brew floor, we’ll try to educate you on all things beer. And maybe you’ll love it. The name says it all, we’re a little weathered by life and really don’t mind it. All part of the adventure…
